Event Details

Geeks In The Peaks is a low-tech gathering of technology, mapping, outdoor and other assorted geeks in the fabulous Peak District.

Established in 2009, it has now been adopted as a fund-raising event for The GIST Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to developing grassroots technology innovation and community.

What's going on?

The emphasis is enjoying and appreciating the Great Outdoors, getting natural UV rather than the kind generated from your computer monitor.  Some of the group and family activities being planned include:

  • Bushman Skills
  • Wild Food Walk
  • Geek Warrior Training
  • Gourmet Geeks Food Challenge
  • Geo Treasure Hunt
  • Local Archaeological and Industrial Tours

Let us know if you'd like to add something to the mix. There's no obligation to stick in a single group, and plenty of scope to branch out on your own or just take a relaxing break in great company.

There won't be special guest talks, but this is really about the social. Having said that, there's nothing to stop you from holding geeky discussions around the camp fire into the early hours. Don't be surprised though if it turns into a hub for sharing ghost stories by the end of the night.

Changelog

We're making a few improvements based on previous Geeks In The Peaks experiences. Here's just a few of them.

  • Tandoor BBQ and Breakfast Included:
The Camper ticket now includes meals on Friday evening and Sunday morning (with full vegetarian options). This means less wasted food from us all as well as less stuff for you to lug around, less time spent stocking up in advance, lower food costs for campers, and more free time while we're there.
  • Tent Collection / Return and Pitching:
Save time by letting us collect and return your tent, and have it pitched and ready at the site for when you arrive.
  • Passenger Ferry:
Transport issues are sorted for foot passengers and those who want to leave their cars at home. We will run campers between the GIST Lab and the site twice a day on Friday and Sunday. More convenient, more sociable and better for the environment.

What to bring

You will need to bring your own camping gear (resourceful ones amongst you will no doubt pool equipment). This time round we'll help reduce food costs with a communal meal on Friday evening and breakfast on Sunday. You're advised to stock up on your own rations/beer/water for cooking/cleaning the rest of the time.
